The Hockey Goalie's Complete Guide

As a goalie parent, I love this book.  It helps me understand the drills my goalie goes through at practice.  There are diagrams of drills and exercises for on and off-ice training.  The book is best for the beginner goalie, but it's still a great reminder for goalies that have been around a little too long.  Many coaches are player coaches, and really don't have a clue about goalie development and training, so please read this if you are in this boat(crease)!

More Ontario Goalie Classes

Fusion Goaltending - Bill Hoover 647-262-8716 fusiongoaltending@gmail.com  http://www.fusiongoaltending.com/ "Fusion Goaltending operates out of River Oaks Arena in Oakville Ontario. The excellent city run community centre has 2 ice pads and 2 practice pads with REAL ice.  One is called a shooter pad and the other is called a goalie pad and both are excellent ways to conduct one-on-one training sessions while using real ice."  Bill provides one on one training, going over the basics with lots of positive encouragement.  Fusion Goaltending is an excellent resource for goalies.

http://www.onicegoaltendingschool.com/   Hamilton  "On Ice is a private training facility designed and built for the improvement of hockey players using real ice. Our qualified instructors are able to teach in small classes for individual attention. We offer a wide range of training choices to meet any skill level or age. We have been running goaltending and shooting lessons since 1998."......... "run league programs, coaches clinics, team shooting practices and goalie clinics"....."We have a huge selection of new and used goalie equipment in all sizes. There are over a 100 goalie masks to chose from and a great selection of sticks." (905) 574-4148

Goalie Training - a Goalie Parent

When your kid's hockey becomes all encompassing, why not buy a hockey school.  One example is Moe Tanel who owns Team Shutout Goalie School at Varsity Hockey in Brampton.  There's an interview with one of his sons Daniel Tanel at the sportseast.ca website.  19-year-old Acadie-Bathurst Titan is a defenceman and in the article, talks about his brother, goaltender Matt Tanel." "He was a goaltender with the Mississauga Ice Dogs," said Tanel, a native of Brampton, Ont. now in his third season with the Titan. "When my brother became a goaltender, my dad enrolled him in a goalie school and eventually became good friends with the guy who owned it and became an instructor for the goalie school. Then (eventually) my dad bought the school." "  Check out the rest of the story at http://sports.canadaeast.com/article/981448

Team Shutout Goalie School at Varsity Hockey was a good solid spot to take my goalie for regular goalie lessons.  As always, you need to shop around and decide on which trainer suits your goaltender's personality and style, but goaltenders often need regular practice and reviews away from their teams.  This is a convenient and well organized place to get that regular training.

Goalie School at Varsity

This is from Team Shut Out Goalie School at Varsity Hockey in Brampton.  It's their September update:

"Personal Attention Training Goalie Clinics

Some time slots are filling...so CALL NOW to ensure your preferred training hour
Our PERSONAL ATTENTION TRAINING Goalie Clinics will incorporate a training format that will focus on the profile based needs of the individual goalie. Students will work within drills that break down and isolate the key elements of movement and crease management. The training program is structured to continue to elevate the level of the Techniques of Movement and Save Selection in conjunction with Crease Management and Game Strategies within a drill setting that is relative to the student’s technical level.

On-Ice Goalie Clinics is offered within a 24 week training period which begins the week of Sept 13/10. Spots can be pre registered in 6 week cycles in single or multiple cycle packages.
PLEASE CALL NOW @ 905-874-8418 AS SPOTS ARE FILLING QUICKLY

RANGE Training with Puck Machine
Our RANGE training with PUCK MACHINE is designed to work primarily on the mechanical and technical fundamental skills of the SAVE SELECTIONS which are required by goalies and will allow them to better stop and control pucks. With the use of the PUCK MACHINE, goalies will focus on the development of all required SAVE SELECTION and will encourage the development of vision in relation to tracking of the puck from the release through to the save selection.

This training format will also allow us to isolate and repeat the key elements of save selections and provide for the correction of save fundamentals. With the high volume of shots created by this format and the accuracy of puck placement of the PUCK MACHINE, this allows for the systematic repetition of these fundamentals and will produce consistent execution, correct muscle memory and help with leg strength/core/conditioning

"Year Round Training" Model

To best achieve an athlete’s goals, their training program is best served by beginning with a DEVELOPMENT PLAN of ACTION. The plan should direct the course that the goalie’s training will take throughout the entire calendar year.

“Profile Based Yearly Training Planner” program should direct the course of the training and take into account the development of Mechanics and Techniques (Fundamental Skills), Strategies (Game Situation), Physical (Conditioning) and Managing the Mind (Mental). The yearly training planner should also incorporate the training phases of General Preparation, Specific Preparation, Maintenance/Development and Playoff/Pre-Tryout.

To best help you tailor a Development Program, we will first evaluate the goalie’s "TRAINING PROFILE". His/her level is categorized in an Introductory, Intermediate, Advanced and Jr./PRO training profile. Once established we will give you advice in putting together the Development Program that will identify the Athlete’s Goals along with balancing the Parent's Expectations, which include availability of time, schedule and budget.
